All that jazz (and more)

Published on February 16, 2016 by Madrid SmartRentals

This iconic musical directed by the great Bob Fosse in 1979 gives name to this Monday’s post. It’s not that the film is all about jazz, but the title is perfect for us to tell you about the best places to enjoy this kind of music in its broadest understanding.

Today we’re going to show you the most frequented disc stores for the lovers of the music of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane or Wes Montgomery as well as the upcoming jazz festivals and the best concert halls in Madrid.

The jazz scene

Madrid is as attractive in its luminous version as in its darker night theme. There’s few musical genres as intimate as Jazz. Madrid is a city with a wide variety of concert halls, bars and places to discover and enjoy this music style.

Sala Clamores

This is a classic venue of Madrid’s night scene. Although specially designed for jazz and soul concerts, it also holds other types of events. Enjoy their weekend jam-sessions until very late at night.

Café Central

Since 1982, the Café Central (Plaza del Ángel, 10), has organized over 11,000 concerts and live performances. In over three decades this is still one of the best places to be entertained by live music in Madrid. Jazz legends like Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, Tete Montoliu or more contemporary figures like Concha Buika have set foot in this emblematic Café.

Bogui Jazz

The perfect example of a place for jazz-lovers in the centre of Madrid. The Bogui Jazz (Calle del Barquillo, 29) is a party venue with a clear resemblance to New York’s distinctive Jazz clubs. Every weekend it hosts live concerts and DJ sessions in its dance floor. Since 2005, this is a must in Madrid’s night scene for Spanish or international jazzmen.

Although the list of jazz clubs in Madrid could go on and on, we can name a few more of the most representative: “Plaza Jazz Club” (Martín de los Heros, 3), “El Junco” (Plaza de Santa Bárbara, 10) or the “Café Populart” (CalleHuertas, 22).

Jazz stores in Madrid.

There’s no need to say that the physical music format sale is not at its best. However, in Madrid you will find a specialized jazz store that you can’t miss. This is “Jazz y Más” (Calle de la Palma, 33). A timeless store for be-bop, hard-bop or swing enthusiasts. This remarkable Shangri-La for music addicts recommends also a mixture of Japanese editions, merchandising, special offers or even the whole catalogue of “Impulse!” or “Blue note”.
